HISTORY OF THE CARDIFF SCHOOL OF SELF DEFENSE

Gary Bufton opened the Cardiff School Of Self Defense in September 1977 at Station Terrace, Cardiff, (Where the Capital Odeon Cinema is now).
The club moved site in 1983 and began to expand again, reinforcing its reputation as not only the largest Karate dojo in Wales, but one of the largest in Britain.
Classes are structured separately for juniors and seniors with senior classes being divided into beginners, middle and high grades. There are also specialist classes for knock-down fighters and the dojo is used by the Welsh junior, ladies and men's teams for squad training.
Several 'uchi-deshi' (live in) students have studied karate intensively for various periods of time; 4 Swedish, 1 South African, 1 Belgian, 2 Spanish , 1 Irish and 2 Norwegian.
During it's 21 Years history the Cardiff dojo has consistently produced members for all Welsh teams. It has als spawned other karate dojos - Barry in 19980, Cynon Valley - 1981, Newport - 19985, Gwmbran - 1986, Gavle, Seden - 1987 and Penarth - 1991. 27 individuals have attained the prestigious KYOKUSHIN Black Belt ( which takes on average 6 years training).
The Club is not a stranger to the media of television having been featured on the following programmers through the 80's:
1. CHWARAE TEG, 2. AMSER CHWARAE, 3. JUST AMAZING, 4. WORLD OF SPORT, 5. RECORD BREAKERS, 6. FIT FOR THE FAMILY, 7. CHILDREN IN NEED 1986/87/88, 8. TELETHON 1988/90, 9. STOPWATCH, 10.
